PREFACE SUB-FOOTNOTE 233 rationally. And it is believed in learned circles that the six planets have something to do with the development to completion of the human foetus. There is for instance, full discussion of this subject in Sadīdī. ' Some ignorant people put forward the objection with reference to this verse that the recent researches in medical science do not support this view of the development of the human foetus in the womb; that the modern view rather proves the opposite. This objection is based either on great ignorance or, uninhibited prejudice. No one skilled in medical science is needed to demonstrate this. Everyone can discover the truth himself devoting some time to the examination of children born after full development or incomplete development or those who are aborted or miscarried. And, as I know it from personal observation, it is undoubtedly a fact, that when God intends to make it to grow in the womb from a spermatozoa, the ovum and the spermatozoa min- gling together are embedded in the wall of the uterus, and after some days are made into something like a clot wrapped within a membrane which increases in size with the growth of the child until it becomes a bag of earthen colour looking like a bundle within which the child attains its full development. We know from the Holy Quran, and recent investigations support the view, that the larger universe, till the time of its full and complete creation, was like a bundle, as Allah, glori- fied be His eminence, points out in the verse: أَو لَمْ يَرَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَنَّ السَّمَوتِ وَالْأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَهُمَا وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيْ Part 7— Meaning that: Allah says, have the disbelievers not seen that the heav- ens and the earth were tied together like a bundle and We opened them up?
