PREFACE SUB-FOOTNOTE 227 Oneness and Uniqueness. God Almighty's promises are not like some- thing uttered casually, which might later have to be fulfilled perfunc- torily such promises do not befit the Majesty of the All-Wise and All-Knowing God. It is the weak human, the fulfilment of whose promises cannot always remain free from the obstacles of affectation and weakness, or constraints and helplessness. Moreover, the fulfil- ment of human promises is subject to accidental circumstances—not on knowledge, certainty, and eternal wisdom. But the promises of God Almighty are manifested in accordance with His eternal attributes; His promises are one of the branches of His infinite wisdom. And if someone raises the objection here as to why God Almighty has limited the number of heavens to seven, the reply is that this really refers to the different influences which the various celestial bodies absorb from the different heavenly regions, and which are then trans- mitted to the earth. This is elaborated in the following verse: اللهُ الَّذِى خَلَقَ سَبْعَ سَمُوتٍ وَ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ مِثْلَهُنَّ يَتَنَزَّلُ الْأَمْرُ بَيْنَهُنَّ لِتَعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قدِيرُ و أَنَّ اللهَ قَدْ أَحَاطَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عِلْمًاه - Part Number 28— Meaning that: The heavens were created by God Almighty created the heavens to be seven in number, and so were seven earths brought into being. He projected the influences of the seven heavens, which has been placed in them by the command of Allah, on to the seven earths, so that man might know that God Almighty can create everything. And that He has the perfect power to create everything and to implement all His designs and all His works in a variety of ways. Thus you may expand your knowledge and develop the sciences, the arts, Astronomy, Medicine and Geography by which way man may realize the great- ness of God-how His knowledge and perfect wisdom is enveloping everything, and by what perfect technique and by what solid arrange- ment the relationship is maintained between the heavens and what is 1. Surah at-Talaq, 65:13 [Publisher]
