PREFACE ESSENCE OF ISLAM 85 may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, threw a handful of pebbles at the enemy during the Battle of Badr, not with any prayer but only with his spiritual power. But that handful of pebbles manifested the power of God and affected the opposing army in such an extraordinary manner that not a single one of them was left whose eye was not affected. They were rendered like the blind and were overpowered by such alarm and fright that they fled like the bewildered. Allah, glorified be His eminence, alludes to this miracle in the following verse: وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ وَلَكِنَّ اللهَ رَى Meaning that: When you threw that handful, it was not you who threw it, but it was God Almighty who threw it. That is to say, Divine power came into play behind the veil; this task was not possible for any human power. AUTHOR'S MARGIN NOTE [Cont. ] Miraculous Signs of the Messengers of Allah In the same way, a second miracle of the Holy Prophet, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—namely, Shaqqul- Qamar [Splitting of the Moon]-was shown by the same power of the Divine. It was not accompanied by any prayer because it was manifested by the mere pointing of his finger, which was charged with the power of Allah. There are many other such miracles that the Holy Prophet, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, showed, which were manifested only through the power bestowed upon his own being, unaccompanied by any prayer. On many occasions, the Holy Prophet, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, by merely placing his fingers in a cup of water, increased the quan- tity of water to satisfy the thirst of the whole Muslim army, camels, and horses, and the quantity of water was still the same as before.
