56 HADRAT MIRZA GHULAM AHMADAS In short, remember that whatever has been done so far in response to the opponents is quite insufficient. Our opponents have turned the people of every nation and class against Islam by spreading tens of millions of books in the world. What have we done in response to millions of books, journals and two-page pamphlets that are being published monthly in their hundreds of thousands in the Punjab and the rest of India, and are circulated to every tribe, man and woman? What response has been pub- lished by the Muslims vis-à-vis those three thousands objections that were made in a variety of academic contexts and circulated far and wide, and were impressed upon hearts? Here by way of estimation I have mentioned only such objections as have been commonly raised and heard, while actually our biased opponents have raised so many objections against hundreds of verses of the Holy Quran that writing their response by itself requires a full- length commentary on the Holy Quran. Now the wise and fair- minded people should reflect for a moment: how unfair it is on the part of the Anjuman-e-Himāyat-e-Islām and its supporters that while they are so active in their worldly pursuits that they employ all kinds of measures to accomplish them, yet they per- ceive no need whatsoever for a continuous endeavour to defend Islam against the deceitful stratagems pursued day and night by its opponents. I despaired of this Anjuman on the very day when it initiated an ultimate measure of compromise by appointing its president someone who abuses Hadrat Abu Bakr and Hadrat [Umar] Fārūq and also by allowing a follower of Biyādiyah sect, who remember Hadrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, with scornful, blasphemous and abusive words, to become its member.
