FIRST, it is objected, “What the local Anjuman-e-Himayat- e-Islām meant by sending a memorial regarding the trea- tise of Ummahātul-Mu'minin-which was replete with extremely offensive remarks and it was feared that its con- tents would lead to a law and order situation-was for the publication of it to be ceased. Now Mirza Şāhib of Qadian has sent a memorial against this [proposal] so that this blessings of Allah be upon him. Influenced by the propaganda of the bi- ased Christian priests, he would repeatedly assert that our Messenger sas neither performed any miracle nor made any prophecy, and that it was the mullahs who filled the books with the accounts of false miracles in order to publicise their religion. Eventually, my heart was deeply hurt by hearing his incessant mockery. At times I prayed thus: O my Lord! You are All-Powerful, do manifest a sign for the honour of Your Prophetsas or make a prophecy come true that may fully establish my argument. After these supplications, my heart was content that God would cer- tainly support me against him, and I was apprised that he would be the target of the prophecy. Therefore, I warned him of it and after his de- parture I requested him through written correspondence that he allow me to publish any kind of prophecy I receive about him. So, he sent me his written permission through a postcard saying that he would not be offended by any kind of prophecy regarding him, for he deemed it sheer nonsense and absurdity. After his permission, I repeatedly beseeched the Almighty Who bestowed some revelations about him which I had published in his lifetime. In those days, he, too, in his presumption and audacity published an announcement about me, namely that he had also received the revelation that this man [i. e. the Promised Messiah] would die of cholera within three years. In the end, what God had de- creed came to pass and Lekh Ram, according to the time limit set by the prophecy, passed away from this transient world. Now judge for yourselves, was I to blame for what happened? There are more than fif- ty witnesses to all the incidents I have written above.
