86 HADRAT MIRZA GHULAM AHMADAS fear and danger strikes us even if we happen to pass by the den of the lions. The transgressors have been visited with the humiliation of failure. Those who cause agitation and are liars have been pushed into a corner, while we live a life of peace and comfort. Can there be greater injustice than being ungrateful to this kind Government and harbouring rancour, evil or rebellion [in our hearts]? Is this goodness? Nay, it is an evil if only you knew. Woe betides those who seek disorder and harbour enmity in their hearts. Surely, Allah does not like those who create disorder. They are a people who forgot the manners of gratitude despite having witnessed the favours. Satan caused them to forget the precepts of Shariah they had been enjoined to follow. They have done an abominable thing and deviated far from moderation. They are left only with the ignorant sense of honour and the violence of rebel- lious self. They do not walk like the one who fears [God] and moves humbly. They do not refrain from bragging nor do they remember the state they were in during the corrupt Sikh regime. Do they not realise that showing gratitude to those who deserve it is among the chief injunctions of the Quran and to honour the benefactor is something taught by the Book of the Gracious God? In fact, Allah has appointed the British Government to adminis- ter our worldly affairs and to protect us day and night. Indeed, we have attained our good objectives through them and been deliv- ered from frightening calamities. How on earth can we not be grateful to them, knowing that they have done us great favours? How can we forsake them despite knowing that they are our pro- tectors from Allah, and Allah loves those who show kindness. Before this we had been robbed of our villages and possessions and our guest houses and sitting rooms were destroyed. We were
