THE MESSAGE OR A CRY OF ANGUISH 85 rose up. We hoped, after a long time, that the preaching of Islam would serve as an antidote to the poisons of disbelief and we became secure against the evil of every sudden calamity. We returned home from the desert of homelessness. The tree of our being was saturated with the reviving water so that it well-nigh descended into our courts and we became secure to a degree that we found every one who had turned away out of enmity as a friend and a devotee and serpent-like enemies turned into sympathetic helpers. Our outer and inner states were transformed and we turned to goodness and truth. We were revitalised by this Government that came like the first rain of the spring at a time of severe drought. This Government looked closely into our circum- stances and being apprised of our degradation and weakness, shel- tered us, showed us mercy, sympathised with us and took care of us so much so that, after grievous suffering, we became prosper- ous. Now we sleep peacefully at night and nothing disquiets or disturbs our bodies. In our gardens, the nightingales sing songs of bliss and prosperity, while swinging from the great tree of sincer- ity. All this, after we had endured many kinds of hardships. Now judge for yourselves, is it not incumbent upon us to be grateful to such a Government which Allah has made the means of all these blessings and through which He has released us from the prison of hardships? Is it not obligatory upon us to raise our hands in pray- ing earnestly and humbly for this [Government] and to repay its favours with prayers since it has been beneficent to us? On account of this, our hearts are filled with bliss and our faces are glowing with happiness; our days are filled with peace and freedom and our nights are fragrant with comfort and prosperity.
