REFUTING OBJECTIONS Messengers], and took his insults to the utmost extreme. The words he used make hearts quiver and stir in agony. I shall, at some point, reproduce a small portion thereof in writing, and thereby lift the veils of those who are unaware. Now, we proceed to inform this noble government of the lies he has fabricated against us, as well as the allegation that we are enemies of the British government. The government should know that all such discourses are fabrications and the weaving of mischief and do not contain an iota of truth. Nothing drove him to do so except certain interests he perceived within those machinations and to please the most prominent priests. All praise belongs to Allah that the reality behind his false statements is not hidden from the government, and we are safeguarded from his mischief. We perceive our brilliant ser- vices as a rebuttal to his allegations, like shooting stars that are hurled at devils. My ways and circumstances are not hidden from the authorities. I do not act in secret; rather, the British government knows me and knows my forefathers and observes my ways and my claims. It knows my lineage and origins and is not ignorant of my household. The government knows that I am neither a troublemaking enemy nor a transgressing oppres- sor. It is not as though I have just emerged from a cave, that the government would be unfamiliar with my affairs. In fact, the government is proud of people like me. Anyone who pays attention to my words and carefully observes my actions will be aware of my deeds and that I am among the truthful. The government is well acquainted with the deep- est depths of my affairs and my circumstances are not hidden from it. This government's thoughts are like charging horses- outpacing the strongest she-camels. When it sets its mind towards a purpose, it does so with full conviction. It possesses every type of intelligence save the comprehension of religion. I pray that Allah opens this door for it, too, the way He has 47
