REFUTING OBJECTIONS and forsook remorse, and deemed the Best of Messengers to be like the insane. He became as far removed from the truth as the desert lizard is from the ocean whale, and spurned those who reform and admonish. Moreover, he criticized the eloquence of the Book of Allah, the Quran, and the rhetoric of the Rope of Allah, the Furqān, and did so unjustly and dishonestly, only to please [spiritually] ruined people, even though he himself is ignorant and blind. By God, this man is ignorant and does not know the lan- guage of the Arabs and the ways of its expression; and he pos- sesses nothing of its substance besides abusive epithets. For this reason, there is nothing in his books apart from insults and nonsense. He was utterly incapable of concealing the truth or finding fault with it, so he resorted to levelling insults like those who oppose us with great enmity. I have not read a book that provokes my ire more than his books, and I have not seen a flood greater than the flood of his lies. I have not heard vile lan- guage worse than his invectives, and there is no imposture like his imposture. So I seek Allah's protection from his mischief and He is the Best of Helpers. I seek refuge with God from his calamities and complain to Him about his vices. I do not foresee him relenting from his transgressions without being branded- and this indeed is the way of those who create disorder. Reverend Rajab Ali, who is his generous brother and ear- nest friend, has confirmed this about him. He stated: 'Our brother 'Imad-ud-Din wrote books in refutation of Islam and published proofs of the Trinity among the elite and common- ers. But because his arguments were a compilation of lies and far from accurate evidence, we came to feel an extreme sense of remorse, and became the object of ridicule. After this, we were so ashamed that we were unable to show our faces before the Muslims. '1✩ 1. ✩ See Footnote on p. 235. [Publisher] 233
