عاد عهد promise an oath ) عَلَيَّ عَهْدُ اللَّهِ لَافْعَلَنَّ كَذَا : I have taken an oath to God that I shall do this); a writ; defence of those persons or things that should be protected and held sacred or are entitled to reverence, respect or honour; fulfilment of a promise; the assertion of the unity of God; )مَنِ اتَّخَذَ عِنْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ عَهْدًا : Who has made a covenant with the Gracious God to assert His unity )19:88(; time, a first rain. اَفَطَالَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْعَهْدَ : Did the appointed time appear too long to you? )2087( ذَلِكَ فِي عَهْدِ شَبَابِي : This was during the time of my youth. كَيْفَ يَكُوْنُ لِلْمُشْرِكِيْنَ عَهْدٌ : How can there be a treaty for the idolaters? )97( كَانَ عَهْدُ اللَّهِ مَسْئُولًاً God's covenant will have to be answered for (33:16). عَهَنَ ]aor. يَعْهُنُ inf. noun عَهَنَ بِالْمَكَانِ عَهْنَّ : He remained, stayed or dwelt in the place. عَهَنَ فِى الْعَمَلِ : He strove, exerted himself in the work. عِهْنٌ : Wool; coloured wool )101:6(. , : عَوِجَ ]aor. يَعْرَجُ inf. noun عَرَجٌ and اِعْرَجٌ inf noun عَوِجَ اِغْوِجَاجٌ : It was or became crooked, curved, bent, winding, distorted or uneven. عَوِجَ الْعُوْدُ : The wood was or became crooked, curved or bent. عَوِجَ الْأَمْرُ : The affair was or became difficult or arduous. عَوِجَ : Crookedness or curvity; unevenness; corruption or deviation from rectitude; evilness of natural disposition. يَبْغُوْنَهَا عِوَجًا : They seek to make it crooked )14:4(. He or it : عَادَ فِيْهِ وَلَهُ وَعَادَ إِلَيْهِ . [ مَعَادٌ and عَوْدٌ inf. noun يَعُودُ . aor] عَادَ returned to it or he returned to it after he had turned away from it. عَادَ إِلَى كَذَا : He or it came to such a thing or state or condition at first or for the first time or originally and also a second time or again. The verb is trans. by means of عَلى and في as well as إلى and and also by itself. لَتَعُوْدُنَّ فِي مِلَّتِنَا : You shall assuredly return to our religion )7:89( ثُمَّ يَعُوْدُوْنَ لِمَا قَالُوْا : Then they go back on what they have said )58:4( وَمَنْ عَادَ : And he who reverted to it )2:276( عَادَ meaning he repeated or did a second time. بَدَاَ ثُمَّ عَادَ : He did for the first time or he began, then repeated or did for the second time. يَعُوْدُ عَادَ الْمَرِيْضَ inf. noun عِيَادَةٌ( : He visited the sickman time after time. عَادَ السَّائِلَ : He rejected the beggar or turned him back عَادَ عَلَيْهِمُ الدَّهْرُ : The time destroyed them. 599
