عف عطل object of sense or of intelligence, a substance or an accident or it or he was or became great in estimation or rank or dignity; and it or he was or became great in comparison with other things or men. عَظُمَ عَلَيْهِ الْأَمْرُ : The affair became difficult and oppressive for him. أَعْظَمَ الشَّيْءَ and عَظْمَهُ : He made the thing great, big or large; he treated it or him with respect or veneration. فَعَلْتُ كَذَا تَعْظِيمًا لَهُ : I did thus for the purpose of rendering honour to him or it. وَيُعْظِمْ لَهُ أَجْرًا : And He will enlarge his reward )65:6( وَمَنْ يُعَظِمْ شَعَائِرَ اللهِ : And whoso respects the sacred Signs of Allah )22:33( عَظْمٌ : Bone of an animal upon which is flesh. وَهَنَ الْعَظْمُ مِنِّي : My bones have become feeble )19:5( عِظَامٌ is plural. انْظُرْ إِلَى الْعِظَامِ : Look at the bones )2:260(. عَظِيمٌ : Great big or large etc. contrary of حَقِيرٌ ; great in estimation or rank or dignity; huge, enormous or vast; of great magnitude or importance; of great gravity; severe, grievous, formidable or terrible. عَظِيمٌ is superior to كبير because while the latter signifies great etc. in itself, the former i. e. عَظِيمٌ signifies esteemed great by others or great in comparison with other things of its kind. كَبِيرٌ is cont. of رَجُلٌ عَظِيمٌ فِي الْمَجْدِ صَغِيرٌ : A man great in respect of glory. رَمَاهُ بِعَظِيمٍ : He accused him of an act of great gravity or with an enormity. وَهُوَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ عَظِيمٌ : In the sight of God it was a grievous thing )24:16( عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ : Great punishment )2:8(. عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ : The punishment of a dreadful day )6:16( الْعَظِيمُ is one of the attributes of Allah i. e. Incomparably Great )2:256( اَعْظَمُ : More or most great etc. أَعْظَمُ دَرَجَةً عِنْدَ اللَّهِ : The highest rank with Allah )9:20(. ७० عَفَّ ]aor. يَعِفُّ inf. noun عِفَّةٌ and عَفَاتٌ [ : He abstained from )عَنْ( what was unlawful or not decorous or from things that should be sacred or inviolable, base or carnal, objects of inordinate desire. عَفَّ also means, he was modest, chaste, virtuous etc. Generally in the Qur'an the verb is used without the expression of the object or objects. اِسْتَعَفَّ and تَعَفَّفَ signify the same تَعَفَّفَ also signifies, he affected or constrained himself to abstain from what was unlawful. وَمَنْ كَانَ غَنِيًّا فَلْيَسْتَعْفِفْ : And who is rich, let him abstain )4:7( وَلْيَسْتَعْفِفِ الَّذِيْنَ لَا يَجِدُوْنَ نِكَاحًا : And who have no 580
