عظم عطل عَطَا وو destitute of property. عَطِلَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ : The woman had no ornament upon her body. عَطَلَ الْآجِيرُ )aor. ( يَعْطُلُ( : The hired man was without occupation عَطَّلَ الشَّيْءَ : He left the thing unattended or neglected عَطَّلَ الْإِبِلَ : He left the camels without a pasture to tend them. التعطيل signifies the rendering of a place vacant, void or unoccupied, or a thing unattended or neglected, or making a man or a thing unemployed or unused, free from work. وَإِذَا الْعِشَارُ عُطَّلَتْ : And when the camels ten months old will be left without a pasture or unattended or unemployed )815( عُطَّلَتِ الرَّعِيَّةُ : The subjects were left without any governor to govern them. عُطَّلَتِ الْبَشْرُ : The well was left in a state that none came to it for taking water from it. عَطَّلَ الْبَشْرَ : He left off going to the well. مُعَطَّلٌ is pass. part. and مُعَطَّلَةٌ feminine of it. بِتْرٍ مُّعَطَّلَةٍ : Deserted well (22:46). ]aor. يَعْطُوْ inf. noun عَطَا الشَّيْءَ عَطْوٌ : He took the thing. عَطَا إِلَيْهِ يَدَهُ : He raised his hand towards it. عَطْرٌ signifies the act of raising the head and hands to take a thing. أَعْطَاهُ الشَّيْءَ : He gave him the thing. اِعْطَاءٌ is the act of giving, presenting or offering. تعاطى الشَّيْءَ : He took the thing: تَعَاطَى الْأَمْرَ : He ventured upon the affair تَعَاطَى الرَّجُلُ : The man stood upon the extremities of the toes and raised his hands to take a thing. تَعَاطِيًا is the act of taking a thing with the hand; taking with the hand what is not right or just or due; contending in taking; standing upon the extremities of the toes with raising the hands to a thing; being bold, daring or courageous so as to venture upon a thing without consideration or hesitation. إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ : Indeed We have given thee abundance of good )1082( فَتَعَاطَى فَعَقَرَ : And he seized (a sword) and hamstrung (her( )54:30( عَطَاءٌ : A thing that is given; a gift, meaning an act of giving of such as is bountiful or generous. عَطَاءً غَيْرَ مَجْذُوْذٍ : A gift that shall not be cut off )11:109( عَطَاءُ also signifies a soldier's pay or stipend. عَظُمَ ]aor. يَعْظُمُ inf. noun عَظَامَةٌ and عَظِمٌ : He was or became great in his bone. This seems to be the primary signification of the word; then metaphorically said of any thing great, whether an 579
