الف 2) ; مُنْقَطِعُ( it is used as syn. with غَيْرُ and سِوَى . . . "other than" or "not". لَوْ كَانَ فِيْهِمَا الْهَةٌ إِلَّا اللَّهُ لَفَسَدَنَا : There had been in them gods other than Allah (or not Allah), then the two would have gone to ruin (21:23). (3) Sometimes it is used as a conjunction as syn. with و i. e. "And". For this meaning of اِلّ see vv. 2:151; 27:10, 11,12. )4( Sometimes it is syn. with لَمَّا meaning "but", "except", "only" or "nothing more than". إِنْ كُلٌّ إِلا كَذَّبَ الرُّسُلَ : لک There was not one of them but treated their Messengers as liars (38:15). (5) It is also a particle (or rather a compound of two words) denoting the complement of a condition; originally إِنْ لَا ,signifying "if not" or "unless". إِلَّا تَفْعَلُوْهُ تَكُنْ فِتْنَةٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ : If you do not do it, there will be mischief in the land )8:74( إِلَّا تَنْصُرُوْهُ فَقَدْ نَصَرَهُ اللَّهُ : If you do not help him, certainly Allah helped him لک Do not die unless you are : فَلاَ تَمُوْتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنْتُمْ مُّسْلِمُوْنَ (9:40) الا Muslims (2:133). یک اَلَتَ aor. يَأْلِتُ inf. noun 1) : اَلْهَا( t (a thing) decreased; )2( diminished; (3) lessened; (4) became defective, deficient, incomplete or imperfect. اَلَتَهُ حَقَّهُ : He diminished to him his right or due or defrauded him of aportion of it. مَا اَلَتْنَاهُمْ مِنْ عَمَلِهِمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ : We will not diminish to them aught of the recompense of their work (52:22) أَلِفَ ]aor يَأْلُفُ inf. noun الفَهُ اَلْفٌ : He kept or clave to it. اَلفَهُ )aor. يَأْلُفُ and يَأْلِفُ inf. noun اَلْفٌ and الْفَهُ aor. يُوَالِفُ . inf. noun ) and )aor. يُولِفُ inf. noun 1) : (إيلا( He frequented it or resorted to it habitually; (2) he became familiar with it or accustomed to it; )3( he became friendly with him, he loved him. الْفَة also means: He provided him with necessary things and prepared him; (4) he made a covenant with him during a journey for the purpose of trade; he traded with him; (5) he made him to keep or cleave to the place; (6) he made him love it or him; he made him stick For the keeping of the : لِاِيْلفِ قُرَيْشٍ الفِهِمْ رِحْلَةَ الشَّتَاءِ وَالصَّيْفِ . to it Kureish to the journey of the winter and the summer.
