" H u du r sa (whose S al a t every night was as long as this night's) smiled on hearing this comment. 31 Quite often he would spend the whole night in worship. Hadrat ‘Abdull a h bin Mas‘ u d ra says that one night he offered S al a t with H u du r sa. He stood for such a long time that a base idea came to his mind. When asked about this idea he replied that he wanted to sit down and leave the Holy Prophet Muhammad sa standing. 32 Hadrat Ab u Dharr ra relates that one night H u du r sa recited only one verse in Qiy a m , Ruk u ‘ and Sajdah , till the dawn. When asked about this verse, he replied: ْ ْاِن َّﺗُﻌَﺬِّﺑْﻬُﻢ ﻓَﺎِﻧ ْ ـ َﻬُﻢ ﻋِﺒَﺎدُك ۚ◌ ْ ْوَاِن َﺗَﻐْﻔِﺮْهلَُﻢ َﻓَﺎِﻧَّﻚ ِاَﻧْﺖ ْ اﻟْﻌَﺰ ُ ﻳ ْﺰ اﻟ ِ ـ ْ ﺤَﻜ ُ ﻴ ﻢ (5:119) The verse means "If Thou punish them, they are Thy servants; and if Thou forgive them, Thou surely art the Mighty, the Wise. " 33 Holy is All a h, the enemies of God and His Prophet were sleeping peacefully and God's beloved prophet was supplicating passionately for their forgiveness. Hadrat ‘ A ’ishah ra relates that in the latter part of his life, H u du r sa became slightly plump and used to offer Tahajjud while sitting down and recited long S u rahs.
