In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful THIRD FRIDAY SERMON AUGUST 24, 1990 THE REAL CAUSE OF PROTRACTED PERIOD OF RESTLESSNESS IN THE MIDDLE EAST After reciting the Opening Chapter of the Holy Quran, AJ-Fatiha, Hazoor said: For the past several centuries, the region of the Middle East has been constantly in a state of deterioration. It has been plagued by wars, discontent and many kinds of hardships and suffering. But especially, for the past 40 years, not only have these afflictions and sufferings persisted but have been on the increase. It is not difficult to find its cause, but despite the knowledge of the root causes, neither the East nor the West is paying any attention to it. The fact is that in the last 40 years, the peace of the region was shattered a number of times resulting in a threat to world peace. On every such occasion, the reaction of the West was such that it could only cause greater dangers for the future, instead of diminishing such possibilities. Unfortunately, after repeatedly passing through such bitter experiences, the Muslims living in the Middle East showed the same erroneous reaction as a result of which they had repeatedly suffered losses and thus continued in their agony. It does not behove an intelligent people to go through the same experience over and over again and relive the same disastrous consequences. But apparently there are intelligent people on both sides. Therefore, there must be some other reason for this situation to be getting worse instead of getting any better. A summary diagnosis of the problem is that the root cause of all restlessness is the State of Israel. The West presented an analysis of each conflict in its aftermath, placing the entire responsibility of the war and its ensuing losses upon the people in the Middle East and their leaders while ignoring the root 57
