•oUR BELoVED MASTER• 115 Now the Master sa asked, “Zaid! These two have come to take you with them. Tell us, what do you wish? Do you want to go with them?” The father and uncle both looked at Zaid ra with immense fervour to see what Zaid’s ra reply would be. They were amazed beyond bounds when contrary to their expectation Zaid ra replied, “I shall stay with you – I do not want to go back to my home and shall not go at all. ” At this his father said with amazement, “Zaid ra , do you prefer slavery over freedom? If such is the case, then I greatly lament your wisdom!” Zaid ra answered, “Surely I prefer slavery to Muhammad sa a thousand times above freedom. The merits and virtues I have witnessed in the person of my honourable Master sa have not only enslaved my body, but my soul as well forever. I shall leave the company of my Master sa only when I die. ” At this spirited display of the slave’s loyalty, the Master sa took hold of his hand with excessive affection and took him to the Ka‘bah.
