Psychologists observe that when children are willfully neglected in their early childhood, they sometimes begin to suffer from grave psychological disturbances, which may be incurable. Some of the same children grow up to become criminals and vagrants. In some cases, such children as are neglected by parents are so mentally disturbed that they commit suicide. Some facts and figures published by American experts indicate that in America alone, 400,000 deprived children commit suicide every year because they are so tired of their deprivations. This vice is ever on the increase. The Rights of Orphans The Holy Quran repeatedly warns about the rights of orphans. Those children whose parents are alive can be looked after to some extent by their parents, but who would take care of the orphans? The Holy Quran lays this responsibility on the entire society and takes special care of the rights of orphaned children. In no Divine Book of the world, other than the Holy Quran, one can find such teachings about orphans as are given by the Holy Quran.
