— Part I 136 were taught to conduct their affairs with their fellow human beings. In contrast, we find Jesus as exhorting his followers to 'turn the other cheek. ' So Moses as stressed the importance of justice and of exercising one’s rights, whereas the teachings of Christianity went to the other extreme of benevolence and of sacrificing one’s rights for the sake of others. In some ages, justice is highly emphasised while in others the emphasis is on benevolence but not at the cost of justice. Whatever the teaching, the principle of justice is never violated. It should be remembered that self-sacrifice does not contradict justice. However, to trample on others’ rights even for the sake of benevolence is inconceivable in religion. Christianity never permitted the usurpation of others’ rights for the sake of forgiveness, or for showing favours. The teachings always remained in perfect accordance with the requirements of the age. In the age of Moses as , the specific requirements of the Children of Israel dictated the emphasis on justice and equitable revenge. The age of Jesus as cried out for a completely different remedy to cure the ailing society. In this comparison one can detect the thread of justice linking the two different ages.
