32 Third Rebuttal If the critic thinks that the words آيت — a yat [Sign] or آيات — a y a t [Signs, meaning miracles] prove that no miracle was shown at the hand of Hadrat Kh a tamul-Anbiy a ’ [the Seal of the Prophets] and Sarwar-e-A s fiya’ [the Leader of the Pure], the critic should ponder and ponder well because things appear to be the opposite in S u rah al-‘Ankab u t and S u rah Ban i Isr a ’ i l, to which the critic has referred. Both S u rahs emphatically establish the existence of miracles. First, there are these verses—preceding the verse identified by the critic—in S u rah al-‘Ankab u t: َو َكِلٰذَك ۤاَنْلَزْنَا َكْيَلِا َبٰتِكْلا١ؕ َنْيِذَّلاَف ُمُهٰنْيَتٰا َبٰتِكْلا َنْوُنِمْؤُي ٖهِب١ۚ َو ْنِم ِءٓاَلُؤٰۤه ْنَم ُنِمْؤُّي ٖهِب١ؕ S u rah al-‘Ankab u t, 29:48— َو اَم ُدَحْجَي ۤاَنِتٰيٰاِب اَّلِا َنْوُرِفٰكْلا And in like manner have We sent down the Book to you; the People of the Book who have knowledge do believe in it; and of these Makkans also there are some who believe in it. And none but the disbelievers deny Our Signs (miracles). — َو اَم َتْنُك اْوُلْتَت ْنِم ٖهِلْبَق ْنِم ٍبٰتِك َّو اَل ٗهُّطُخَت َكِنْيِمَيِب اًذِا َباَتْراَّل َنْوُلِطْبُمْلا S u rah al-‘Ankab u t, 29:49 And before this time you were not able to read or write; had it been so, these liars would have doubted. What does this mean? It is that now they are not denying due to doubt; it is sheer stubbornness, obstinacy, and enmity that causes them to deny.
