عنت عن dumb and blind )2:19( عَمْيَاءُ feminine of أَرْضُ عَمْيَاءُ أَعْمَى : A place in which one cannot be directed to the right course. عُمْيَانٌ is also the plural of صُمَّا وَعُمْيَانًا أَعْمَى : Deaf and blind )25:74(. عَنْ As a preposition عَنْ denotes transition. رَغِبْتُ عَنْ كَذَا : I abstained from and did not wish for such a thing. مَنْ يَّرْغَبُ عَنْ مَّلَّةِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ : Who turns away from the religion of Abraham (2:131). It also denotes a compensation. لاتَجْزِي نَفْسٌ عَنْ نَفْسٍ : When a soul shall not give anything as a satisfaction for a soul (2:49). It denotes superiority. فَإِنَّمَا يَبْخَلُ عَنْ نَّفْسِهِ : He only prefers niggardliness to his own soul (47:39). It denotes a cause. إِلَّا عَنْ مَّوْعِدَةٍ وَعَدَهَا : But because of a promise he had made (9:114). It is syn. with بَعْدَ عَمَّا قَلِيْلٍ لِّيُصْبِحُنَّ نَدِمِينَ : After a little while they will assuredly become repentant (23:41). It denotes the meaning of في syn. with مَنْ يَقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِ مِنْ( : He accepts repentance from His servants (42:26). It is also syn. with مَا يَنْطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَى بِ : He does not speak with desire (to gratify himself) (53:4). It is also used as a particle of the kind called مُصَوّرِيٌّ and also as a noun in the sense of جَانِبٌ or نَاحِيَةٌ It is عَتَّبَ الْكَرْمُ عَنَّبَ : The vine-tree produced grapes. عِبَبٌ : Grapes the grape-vine; wine. وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا : And grapes and vegetables )10:29( أَعْنَابٌ )plural( )2:267(. عَنِتَ ]aor. يَعْنَتُ inf. noun عَنَتِ الشَّيْءُ عَنَتٌ : The thing became bad or corrupt. عُنِتَ فُلانٌ : Misfortune befell such a one and he got into trouble. عَنِتَ زَيْدٌ : Zaid met with a calamity and was ruined. عَنِتَ الْعَظْمُ : The bone became weak and broke after it was in a good condition. عَنِتَ الرَّجُلُ : The man committed a sin or crime, or an act of disobedience; he committed fornication or adultery . عَنَتُ : Severe difficulty or hardship; a state of perdition; an evil or corrupt state or conduct; a sin, crime or an act of disobedience deserving punishment; a wrong action, intentional or unintentional; fornication or adultery. لِمَنْ خَشِىَ الْعَنَتَ : For him who is afraid of committing a sin )4:26( اَعْتَهُ : He caused him to fall into trouble, hardship or distress which was hard to bear; he treated him (i. e. a beast) with roughness, such as it could not 596
