عتا عَثَرَ عجب corrupt or disbelieving; he revolted or was averse from obedience. عَمَّا الرَّجُلُ : The man became very old and in a declining state or reached the extreme limit of old age; the man became unable to produce children. عَتَتْ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهَا : She proudly disobeyed or rebelled against the command of its Lord (65:9). عُتَرٌ : Revolt disobedience, exceeding the proper limits in disbelieving, disobedience and behaving proudly. عَتَوْا عُتُوًّا كَبِيرًا : Greatly exceeded the bounds )25:22( عِتِيٌّ : Extreme limit of old age; dryness; disbelief and disobedience. مِنَ الْكِبَرِ عِتِيًّا : The extreme limit of old age or being dried up )199( عَاتٍ : Proud; exorbitant or inordinate; revolting; corrupt. (act. part. ( لَيْلٌ عَاتٍ : Intensely dark night. عَاتِيَةٌ )feminine(. بِرِيْحٍ صَرْصَرٍ عَاتِيَةٍ : By a fierce roaring wind (69:7). ]aor. يَعْثُرُ and عَشِرَ aor. يَعْثَرُ and عَثْرَ aor. يَعْثُرُ inf. noun عِشَارٌ and عَثَرٌ عَثْرَ and عَشَرَ and عَثِرَ : He stumbled or fell upon his face. عَثَرَ فِي كلامه : He stumbled in his speech. عَشَرَ عَلَيْهِ : He lighted on it by chance; he knew or saw it, became acquainted with it accidently. فَإِنْ عُثِرَ : If it becomes known )5:108( عَثُرَ بِهِمُ الزَّمَانُ : Fortune or time destroyed them. عَنَا ]aor. يَعْثُو inf. noun عُشُوٌّ and عَشْرٌ [ and عَشَى ]aor. يَعْنِي inf. noun عَشَيَانٌ : He acted corruptly or did mischief or did so in the utmost degree. وَلا تَعْثَوْا فِي الْأَرْضِ : And do not act corruptly in the earth (2:61). عَجِبَ ]aor. يَعْجَبُ inf. noun عَجِبَ مِنْهُ [عَجَبٌ and عَجِبَ لَهُ and تَعَجَّبَ مِنْهُinf. noun تَعَجُّبٌ : He wondered at it i. e. he deemed it strange, extraordinary or improbable on account of his being little accustomed to it. تَعَجُّبٌ is of two kinds: one is wondering at a thing which one commends, and it means approving a thing and accounting it good; the other is wondering at a thing that one dislikes. عَجَبٌ : Wonder; wondrous; marvellous; a wonderful or marvellous thing. إِنْ تَعْجَبْ فَعَجَبٌ قَوْلُهُمْ : If thou dost wonder, then wondrous indeed is their saying )136( عَجَبٌ when attributed to God, means His being pleased, or His recompensing the people for their wondering at the truth. عَجَبٌ 552
