سمع hearkened or listened but سَمِعَ denotes what is unintentional as well as what is intentional. اِسْتَمَعَ وَاسْتَمَعَ إِلَيْهِ وَاسْتَمَعَ لَهُ : He listened or gave ear to him. فَاسْتَمِعُ لِمَا يُوْحَى : And give ear to what has been revealed We know best what : نَحْنُ اَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَسْتَمِعُوْنَ بِهِ إِذْ يَسْتَمِعُوْنَ إِلَيْكَ . (20:14) they listen for, when they listen to thee )17:48( اَسْمَعَهُ )inf. noun إِسْمَاعٌ ): He made him hear and he made him understand; he told him a thing; he abused or reviled him إِنَّكَ لَا تُسْمِعُ الْمَوْتَى : Thou canst not make the dead to hear )27:81( سَمْعُ : The sense of hearing; the faculty of hearing; it also signifies, the ear; ear-hole; what rests in the ear of a thing which one hears. خَتَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَى قُلُوْبِهِمْ وَعَلَى سَمْعِهِمْ : God وش 28 has set a seal on their hearts and their ears (2:8). The word is used both as singular and plural. أَوْ اَلْقَى السَّمْعَ : Or who gives ear )50:38(. سَمْعًا وَّطَاعَةً : I hear and I obey. سَمْعَكَ إِلَيَّ : Give thy ear to me i. e. listen to me. سَمْعُ also signifies the act of hearing or what one hears. إِنَّهُمْ عَنِ السَّمْعِ لَمَعْزُوْلُوْنَ : Surely, they are debarred from hearing )26:213( ام السَّمْعِ : The brain. ضَرَبَ عَلَى أُمّ السَّمْعِ : He struck him upon the brain. سَمِيعٌ is the intensive form of سامع which is act. part. from سَمِعَ( : syn with سَامِعٌ and سَمِيعٌ مَسْمَعُ is one of the attributes of God and means, One whose hearing comprehends every thing or Who hears everything. It also means مُسْمِعُ i. e. one who makes others to hear. وَاللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيْمٌ : And Allah is All-Hearing and All-Knowing )2:228( سَمِيعٌ when applied to a man also means, made to hear or told سَمَّاعٌ : One who hears, hearkens, or listens much or habitually. It also signifies, quick of hearing; a spy, who searches for information and brings it; obedient( )سَمَّاعُوْنَ plural( سَمْعُوْنَ لِلْكَذِبِ : They are habitual listeners to falsehood )5:43( مُسْمِع act. part. from اَسْمَعَ( : One who makes others hear. وَمَا أَنْتَ بِمُسْمِعِ مَّنْ فِى الْقُبُوْرِ : And thou canst not make those to hear who are in graves )35:23( مُسْمَعُ )past. part. from غَيْرَ مُسْمَعٍ أَسْمَعَ : Without being heard. The expression has a number of meanings: (1) Mayest thou not be made to hear i. e. mayest thou be deaf; (2) Mayest thou not hear anything that may please thee; (3) May not what thou sayest be accepted; (4) Mayest thou be not obeyed; (5) Mayest thou not hear anything 411 28 سمع
