دلک دک director or right director to that which is sought; a guide, an indicator; a discoverer; an indication; an evidence; a proof; an argument; a sign set up for the knowledge of a thing indicated. ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَا الشَّمْسَ عَلَيْهِ دَلِيْلاً : Then We make the sun a guide thereof (25:46). 28 28 28 دَلَكَ aor. يَدْلُكُ inf. noun دَلَكَ الثَّوْبَ دَلْكُ : He rubbed and pressed the cloth or did it well. دَلَكَ عَيْنَيْهِ : He rubbed his eyes. دَلَكَتِ الشَّمْسُ )inf noun دُلُوْفٌ( : The sun declined from the meridian; it became yellow; it set: دَلَكَتِ الشَّمْسُ also signifies, the sun became high دُلُوفٌ )inf. noun(: Declining and paling and setting. In the language of the Arabs دُلُوفٌ is said to be syn. with زَوَالٌ and therefore the sun is said to be دَالِكَةٌ when it is declining at noon and when it is setting. أَقِمِ الصَّلُوةَ لِدُلُوْكِ الشَّمْسِ إلى غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ : Observe Prayer from the declining of the sun at noon to the darkness of the night (17:79): So that the command expressed by the words دُلُوْفٌ and غَسَقٌ and قُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ seems to include the five daily Prayers; for by the word دُلُوْفٌ are expressed the ظُهْرٌ )after noon Prayer) and عَصْرٌ )late after noon Prayers) and by the word غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ are expressed the two Prayers of sunset and night fall ( مَغْرِبٌ and عِشَاءٌ of which each is called عِشَاءٌ and by the words قُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ is meant the morning Prayer ) صَلُوةُ الْفَجْرِ( but if دُلُوْفٌ is taken to mean the setting, the word دُلُوفٌ expresses the three Prayers ظُهْرٌand عَصْرٌ and مَغْرِبٌ . ]aor. يَدْلُوْ inf. noun دَا الدَّلْوَ دَلْرٌ : He sent down the bucket in the well; he Pulled up or out the bucket from the well. لا حَاجَتَهُ : He sought the object of his want. دَلَوْتُهُ : I treated him gently . دَلَّى الشَّيْءَ : He made or brought or drew the thing near to another thing. دَلَّى رِجْلَيْهِ مِنَ السَّرِيْرِ : He let down his legs from the couch. فَدَلَّهُمَا بِغُرُوْرٍ : So he let them fall by deceit or he caused them to fall into disobedience by deceiving them or he emboldened them to act of disobedience with deceit or guile; originally فَدَلُّهُمَا means he excited their cupidity with deceit; he caused them to fall into that which he desired without their knowledge and exposed them to loss )7:23( اَدْلَى الدَّلْوَ : He let down the bucket into the دلا : وَتُدْلُوا بِهَا إِلَى الْحُكَّامِ . He offered his property to him : أَدْلَى بِمَالِهِ إِلَيْهِ . well And do not give it as a bribe to the judges or do not endeavour to 273
