THE RENAISSANCE OF ISLAM 169 Shah abdicated on 15 July 1909 and took refuge in the Russian Embassy. Muhammad Ali Shah made hal£:. hearted attempts to regain the throne but all his efforts were frus~ trated and the prophecy of the Promised Messiah was clearly fulfilled. Lord Curzon, the famous Viceroy of India in the early years of the century, carried out a partition of the Indian Province of Bengal. This action was intensely resented by the Indian National Congress which started a strong agitation against the measure and demanded its cancellation. Its repre- sentations on the subject were repeatedly rejected and Lord Minto, who succeeded Lord Curzon as viceroy, announced that the partition of Bengal would not be revoked or modi- fied. The Secretary of State for India also rejected all repre- sentations made to him on the subject. On II February 1906 the Promised Messiah received a revelation (Urdu): 'Regarding the order that was issued concerning Bengal, they will now be comforted. ' The an- nouncement of this revelation was received by the Hindus of India with derision and scorn as something which was now beyond the range of possibility. Yet on 12 December 1911 King George V, on the occasion of his coronation Durbar held at Delhi, announced the cancellation of the partition and thus fulfilled the prophecy of the Promised Messiah. On 20 December 1905 the Promised Messiah wrote and published a brochure which he called his testament. He stated therein that Divine revelation had repeatedly warned him that his end was near and went on to say: It has been the Divine way since the beginning that He helps his Prophets and Messengers and makes them supreme as He has said: 'Allah has decreed: Most surely, it is I who will prevail, I and My Messengers' (58:22). This means that the Messengers and Prophets desire that God's will may be established on the earth and no one should be able to resist it. Therefore, God Almighty makes their truth manifest through powerful signs. He causes the seed of that
