CHAPTER NINE' The Russo-Japanese war started on 6 February 1904. About the same time the Promised Messiah received a revelation (Urdu): 'An Eastern power and the delicate situation of Korea. ' Quite unexpectedly Russia suffered a series of defeats at the hands of Japan and eventually, in the Treaty of Ports- mouth of 5 September 19°5 which terminated the war, Japan's full authority over Korea was acknowledged, and the prophecy was fulfilled. ' This prophecy was fulfilled once again in 1950, by which time Japan had been reduced from its position of an Eastern power and the U. S. S. R. had emerged as a strong Eastern power. Korea had, in the meantime, been divided into North and South, and North Korea had established an accord with communist China, which in turn had become another great Eastern power. In 1950 Communist North Korea invaded Democratic South Korea, and for a time the situation gravely threatened the maintenance of International peace. Ever since then the relationship between North and South Korea has been a delicate one. On 15 January 1906 the Promised Messiah received a revelation (Persian): 'The palace of the Emperor of Iran has been shaken. ' At the time Muzaffarud Din Shah sat securely on his Imperial throne. He had announced the setting up of a parliament in 1905 and everyone seemed happy. Parliament was opened in Octo ber 1906 and the Shah died on 8 January , 1907. He was succeeded by his son Muhammad Ali Shah who immediately confirmed his predecessor's constitutional reforms; but signs of political unrest soon appeared and there were incidents between the royal guards and patriotic crowds. The Shah dissolved parliament, whereupon the republicans took over the administration of the country, while civil war broke out on a large scale. Eventually the 168
