The Ecosystem 47 The Earth Among the principles of balance relating to the creation of the earth, the Holy Quran mentions a few for the purpose of illustration. For example, And the earth have We spread out, and set therein firm mountains and caused everything to grow therein in proper proportion. (S u rah al- H ijr; Ch. 15: V. 20) This verse of the Holy Quran indicates that God has created the heavens and the earth on similar principles of perfect balance. Consequently whatever is created within the earth and the heavens follows the principles of justice. Hence, God most appropriately declares the heavens to be M i z a n and the earth to be Mauz u n, indicating that the earth did not become balanced by itself but was balanced by an outside superior balancing. The word M i z a n, relating to heavenly principles of justice, also has a clear connotation of being instrumental in creating balance in other things. Therefore, the principle of justice as observed on earth is not born out of its own intrinsic quality but out of something which is bestowed upon it in the heavens. Here we are led to the recognition of another reality;
