There were other thoughts too which filled my heart with Allah’s praise—among them was the zeal of our community. I fully appreciate that the Promised Messiah’s as community has such willingness in making sacrifices that if their Khalifah orders them to go and sit in the rain, they will not hesitate for a minute to obey him. They will come running in obedience. This is the trait of the Promised Messiah’s as community. Yet I would hesitate to require this of them, knowing that among them there are some who are poor, some who are indisposed and also some who are weak. But as far as the spirit of the sacrifice is concerned, it is best expressed in someone’s comment which was brought to my attention today: 'The spirit of zeal and sacrifice of this community makes one shudder. ' We are definitely not among those whose example can be illustrated in the following joke. It is said that a cart belonging to a group of non-Muslims got stuck in mud and they invoked their 'sat-sir i -ak a l' prayer to pull the cart out. They also used other gurus’ names to make their pull more effective, but nothing would work. It so happened that a group of Muslims walked by; they offered to help and gave a mightier pull in the name of Ali, a saintly figure who is popularly held to possess special powers.
