26 A VERDICT REQUIRED God Almighty, for He is loftier than all those who are lofty and possesses majesty. It does not mean that, like a human being, He is in need of a raised platform to serve as a throne. The Quran itself states that He sustains everything but He is Qayyūm [Self-Subsisting and All- Sustaining], Who requires no support from anything. Thus, when the Holy Quran affirms this, how unjust it is to raise an objection against the Arsh! You are wanting in Arabic and you do not even know the meaning of makr. There is nothing improper in the concept of makr that precludes it from being ascribed to Allah the Exalted. Those subtle and hidden works of Allah for the purpose of punishing the wicked are called makr. Look at a dictionary and then raise your objection. If, as you say, I am ignorant of the Vedas, what harm is there in that insofar as I debate holding fast to your accepted prin- ciples? You, however, transgress way beyond the principles of Islam, perpetrating blatant slander. First, you should have asked me the context in which it is believed that God exists on the Arsh, and then-if there was room for it-you should have raised the objection. Likewise, you should have first asked about the meaning of makr and then raised an objection. As for Signs, they are with the Lord.
