Chapter 2 THE PARTS OF A BOOK General Information A book is composed of three primary components: (1) the Front Matter or Preliminary Matter (or Prelims), (2) the Main Text, and (3) the Back Matter or End Matter. In addition to the actual con- tent, books generally include the following parts: FRONT MATTER I Copyright Page 2 Content Page 3 About the Author 4 Publisher's Note 5 Foreword 6 Introduction Publication information, incl. ISBN Lists the sections of the book that follow A brief biography of the author(s) Introduces key styles, translitera- tion, and salutations and may include acknoweldgements. A short introduction about the book writ- ten by someone other than the author that may include background, historical infor- mation, and acknowledgements. Is generally part of the text of the book written by the author to introduce the book's content; however, in the absence of an Introduction, it may be presented as front matter written by someone other than the author as an exception
