  • Part I

  • 84

Holy art Thou! No knowledge have we except what Thou hast taught us; surely, Thou art the All-Knowing, the Wise.

  • 84

Thee alone do we worship and Thee alone do we implore for help.

  • 84

Guide us in the right path —

  • Part II

  • 158

the nature made by Allah — the nature in which He has created mankind.

  • 167

Say, ‘We will adopt the religion of Allah; and who is better than Allah in teaching religion, and Him alone do we worship.’

  • 183

    تَبٰرَکَ الَّذِیۡ بِیَدِہِ الۡمُلۡکُ ۫ وَہُوَ عَلٰی کُلِّ شَیۡءٍ قَدِیۡرُ

    Blessed is He in Whose hand is the kingdom, and He has power over all things;

  • 183

Who has created death and life that He might try you — which of you is best in deeds; and He is the Mighty, the Most Forgiving.

  • Part IV

  • 253

He replied, ‘Throw ye.’ And when they threw, they enchanted the eyes of the people, and struck them with awe and brought forth a great magic.

  • 253

And We inspired Moses, saying, ‘Throw thy rod,’ and lo! it swallowed up whatever they feigned.

  • 253

So was the Truth established, and their works proved vain.

  • 254

He said, ‘Nay, throw ye.’ Then lo! their cords and their staves appeared to him, by their magic, as though they ran about.

  • 254

And Moses conceived a fear in his mind.

  • 254

We said, ‘Fear not, for thou wilt have the upper hand.

  • 259

Shall I inform you on whom the evil ones descend?

  • 259

They descend on every great liar and sinner,

  • 259

Repeating what they hear, and most of them are liars.

  • 261

And We have not sent thee but as a bearer of glad tidings and a Warner, for all mankind, but most men know not.

  • 263

In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.

  • 263

    Alif Lam Mim.

  • 263

This is a perfect Book; there is no doubt in it; it is a guidance for the righteous,

  • 264

It is a guidance for the righteous.

  • 267

    اِنَّمَاۤ اَنۡتَ مُذَکِّرٌ

    For thou art but an admonisher;

  • 267

Thou hast no authority to compel them.

  • 267

And revile not those whom they call upon beside Allah, lest they, out of spite, revile Allah in their ignorance. Thus unto every people have We caused their doing to seem fair. Then unto their Lord is their return; and He will inform them of what they used to do.

  • 268

There should be no compulsion in religion. Surely, right has become distinct from wrong; so whosoever refuses to be led by those who transgress, and believes in Allah, has surely grasped a strong handle which knows no breaking. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

  • 269

Call unto the way of thy Lord with wisdom and goodly exhortation, and argue with them in a way that is best.

  • 270

Do you enjoin others to do what is good and forget your own selves, while you read the Book? Will you not then understand?

  • 270

And when they meet those who believe, they say: ‘We believe,’ and when they meet one another in private, they say: ‘Do you inform them of what Allah has unfolded to you, that they may thereby argue with you before your Lord? Will you not then understand?’

  • 270

And they say, ‘None shall ever enter Heaven unless he be a Jew or a Christian.’ These are their vain desires. Say, ‘Produce your proof, if you are truthful.’

  • 271

O ye people, a manifest proof has indeed come to you from your Lord, and We have sent down to you a clear light.

  • 271

And worldly life is nothing but a sport and a pastime. And surely the abode of the Hereafter is better for those who are righteous. Will you not then understand?

  • 271

Say: “I do not say to you: ‘I possess the treasures of Allah,’ nor do I know the unseen; nor do I say to you: ‘I am an angel.’ I follow only that which is revealed to me.” Say: ‘Can a blind man and one who sees be alike?’ Will you not then reflect?

  • 271

Say, ‘He has power to send punishment upon you from above you or from beneath your feet, or to confound you by splitting you into sects and make you taste the violence of one another.’ See how We expound the Signs in various ways that they may understand!

  • 272

Say, ‘If Allah had so willed, I should not have recited it to you nor would He have made it known to you. I have indeed lived among you a whole lifetime before this. Will you not then understand?’

  • 272

O my people, I do not ask of you any reward therefor. My reward is not due except from Him Who created me. Will you not then understand?

  • 272

Have they taken gods beside Him? Say, ‘Bring forth your proof. Here is the Book of those with me, and the Book of those before me.’ Nay, most of them know not the truth, and so they turn away.

  • 273

And He it is Who gives life and causes death, and in His hands is the alternation of night and day. Will you not then understand?

  • 273

And he who calls on another God along with Allah, for which he has no proof, shall have to render an account to his Lord. Certainly the disbelievers will not prosper.

  • 273

Is there a God besides Allah? Say, ‘Bring forward your proof if you are truthful.’

  • 273

And whatever of the things of this world you are given is only a temporary enjoyment of the present life and an adornment thereof; and that which is with Allah is better and more lasting. Will you not then understand?

  • 274

And We shall draw from every people a witness and We shall say, ‘Bring your proof.’ Then they will know that the truth belongs to Allah. And that which they used to forge will be lost unto them.

  • 274

And he did lead astray a great multitude of you. Why did you not then understand?

  • 274

If We had sent down this Qur’an on a mountain, thou wouldst certainly have seen it humbled and rent asunder for fear of Allah. And these are similitudes that We set forth for mankind that they may reflect.

  • 277

    a guidance for the righteous

  • 277

    Who believe in the unseen.

  • 281

He reveals not His secrets to any one,

  • 281

Except to him whom He chooses, namely a Messenger of His.

  • 282

And they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He pleases.

  • 283

And there is not a thing but with Us are the treasures thereof and We send it not down except in a known measure.

  • 287

And what should make thee know what the Day of Judgment is!

  • 287

Again, what should make thee know what the Day of Judgment is!

  • 287

    The Inevitable!

  • 287

    What is the Inevitable?

  • 287

And what should make thee know what the Inevitable is?

  • 287

Soon shall I cast him into the fire of Hell.

  • 287

And what makes thee know what Hell-fire is?

  • 290

And He has subjected to you whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth: all this is from Him. In that surely are Signs for a people who reflect.

  • 290

And We have not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between the two but in accordance with the requirements of wisdom.

  • 301

    Therein are lasting commandments.

  • 301

    He has created man.

  • 304

He has taught him plain speech.

  • 309

No incongruity canst thou see in the creation of the Gracious God. Then look again: Seest thou any flaw?

  • 309

Aye, look again, and yet again, thy sight will only return unto thee confused and fatigued.

  • 309

Will they not, then, meditate upon the Qur’an? Had it been from anyone other than Allah, they would surely have found therein much disagreement.

  • 309

If there had been in them (the heavens and the earth) other gods beside Allah, then surely both would have gone to ruin. Glorified then be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, above what they attribute.

  • 312

And We have built the heaven with Our own hands, and verily We have vast powers.

  • 313

Do not the disbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were a closed-up mass, then We opened them out? And We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?

  • 315

Remember the day when We shall roll up the heavens like the rolling up of written scrolls by a scribe.

  • 317

And thou seest the mountains which thou thinkest to be firmly fixed, but they shall pass away like the passing of the clouds — the work of Allah Who has made everything perfect.

  • 318

He has created the heavens without any pillars that you can see, and He has placed in the earth firm mountains that it may not quake with you, and He has scattered therein all kinds of creatures; and We have sent down water from the clouds, and caused to grow therein every noble species.

  • 318

And We have made in the earth firm mountains lest it should quake with them; and We have made therein wide pathways, that they may be rightly guided.

  • 318

And He has placed in the earth firm mountains lest it quake with you, and rivers and routes that you may take the right way.

  • 320

each gliding along in its orbit.

Allah is He Who raised up the heavens without any pillars that you can see. Then He settled Himself on the Throne. And He pressed the sun and the moon into service: each pursues its course until an appointed term. He regulates it all. He clearly explains the Signs, that you may have a firm belief in the meeting with your Lord.

  • 320

Hast thou not seen that Allah makes the night pass into the day, and makes the day pass into the night, and He has pressed the sun and the moon into service; each pursuing its course till an appointed term, and that Allah is well aware of what you do?

  • 321

He merges the night into the day, and He merges the day into the night. And He has pressed into service the sun and the moon; each one runs its course to an appointed term. Such is Allah, your Lord; His is the kingdom, and those whom you call upon beside Allah own not even a whit.

  • 321

He created the heavens and the earth in accordance with the requirements of wisdom. He makes the night to cover the day, and He makes the day to cover the night; and He has pressed the sun and the moon into service; each pursues its course until an appointed time. Hearken, it is He alone Who is the Mighty, the Great Forgiver.

  • 322

And the sun is moving on the course prescribed for it. That is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing God.

  • 322

And for the moon We have appointed stages, till it becomes again like an old dry branch of a palm-tree.

  • 322

It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor can the night outstrip the day.

  • 323

And He it is Who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon, each gliding along in its orbit.

  • 323

It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor can the night outstrip the day. All of them float in an orbit.

  • 324

Surely, to Allah we belong and to Him shall we return.

  • 326

Remember the day when We shall roll up the heavens like the rolling up of written scrolls by a scribe.

  • 327

As We began the first creation, so shall We repeat it.

  • 334

He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth.

  • 335

All that is on it (earth) will pass away.

  • 335

And there will remain only the Person of thy Lord, Master of Glory and Honour.

  • 337

Remember the day when We shall roll up the heavens like the rolling up of written scrolls by a scribe. As We began the first creation, so shall We repeat it — a promise binding upon Us; We shall certainly perform it.

  • 341

Allah is He Who created seven heavens, and of the earth the like thereof.

  • 341

And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and of whatever living creatures He has spread forth in both.

  • 342

And He has the power to gather them together when He pleases.

Who has created death and life that He might try you — which of you is best in deeds; and He is the Mighty, the Most Forgiving.

  • 350

Who has created seven heavens in harmony. No incongruity canst thou see in the creation of the Gracious God. Then look again: Seest thou any flaw?

  • 351

What is the matter with you that you expect not wisdom and staidness from Allah?

  • 351

And He has created you in different forms and different conditions.

  • 352

That you shall assuredly pass on from one stage to another.

Allah knows what every female bears, and what wombs diminish and what they cause to grow. And with Him everything has a proper measure.

  • 356

For him (the Messenger) is a succession of angels before him and behind him; they guard him by the command of Allah.

  • 358

And thy Lord creates whatever He pleases and chooses whomsoever He pleases. It is not for them to choose. Glorified be Allah, and far is He above all that they associate with Him.

  • 358

Far, far from truth is that which you are promised.

  • 507

There is no life other than our present life; we were lifeless and now we live, but we shall not be raised up again.

  • 507

And says man, ‘What! when I am dead, shall I be brought forth alive?’

  • 508

And they swear by Allah their strongest oaths, that Allah will not raise up those who die. Nay, He will certainly raise them up — a promise He has made binding on Himself, but most people know not.

  • 508

He will raise them up that He may make clear to them that wherein they differed, and that those who disbelieved may know that they were liars.

  • 508

And he coins similitudes for Us and forgets his own creation. He says, ‘Who can quicken the bones when they are decayed?’

  • 508

Have We then become weary with the first creation? Nay, but they are in confusion about the new creation.

  • 508

And they were wont to say, ‘What! when we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised again,

  • 508

And our fathers of yore too?

  • 509

We have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented.

  • 509

From bringing in your place others like you, and from developing you into a form which at present you know not.

  • 509

And you have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not reflect?

  • 509

Your creation and your resurrection are only like the creation and resurrection of a single soul. Verily Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

  • 511

Dost thou not see that Allah created the heavens and the earth in accordance with the requirements of wisdom? If He please, He can do away with you, and bring a new creation.

  • 511

And that is not at all hard for Allah.

  • 512

We have created them and strengthened their make; and when We will, We can replace them by others like them.

  • 512

But nay! I swear by the Lord of the easts and of the wests, that We have the power.

  • 512

To bring in their place others better than they, and We cannot be frustrated in Our plans.

  • 518

And Allah brought you forth from the wombs of your mothers while you knew nothing, and gave you ears and eyes and hearts, that you might be grateful.

  • 518

The heart of the Prophet was not untrue to that which he saw.

  • 548

And thy Lord creates whatever He pleases and chooses whomsoever He pleases.

  • 589

And thy Lord has inspired the bee, saying, ‘Make thou houses in the hills and in the trees and in the trellises which they build.

  • 589

Then eat of every kind of fruit, and follow the ways of thy Lord that have been made easy for thee.’ There comes forth from their bellies a drink of varying hues. Therein is cure for men. Surely, in that is a Sign for a people who reflect.

  • 594

Have they feet wherewith they walk, or have they hands wherewith they hold, or have they eyes wherewith they see, or have they ears wherewith they hear? Say, ‘Call upon the partners you associate with God, then contrive ye all against me, and give me no time.

  • 596

And if Allah were to punish men for their wrongdoing, He would not leave thereon a living creature, but He gives them respite till an appointed term; and when their term is come, they cannot remain behind a single hour, nor can they go ahead of it.

  • 598

And thy Lord creates whatever He pleases and chooses whomsoever He pleases. It is not for them to choose. Glorified be Allah, and far is He above all that they associate with Him.

  • 600

And thy Lord creates whatever He pleases and chooses whomsoever He pleases.

  • 609

And We brought the children of Israel across the sea; and Pharaoh and his hosts pursued them wrongfully and aggressively, till, when the calamity of drowning overtook him, he said, ‘I believe that there is no God but He in Whom the children of Israel believe, and I am of those who submit to Him.’

  • 609

What! Now! while thou wast disobedient before this and wast of those who create disorder.

  • 609

So this day We will save thee in thy body alone that thou mayest be a Sign to those who come after thee. And surely, many of mankind are heedless of Our Signs.

  • 610

So this day We will save thee in thy body alone.

  • 611

We will save thee in thy body alone.

  • 615

Most surely He Who had made the teaching of Qur’an binding on thee will bring thee back to thy place of return. Say, ‘My Lord knows best who brings the guidance, and who is in manifest error.’

  • 616

And say, ‘O my Lord, make my entry a good entry and then make me come forth with a good forthcoming.

  • 616

    The Romans have been defeated,

  • 616

In the land nearby, and they, after their defeat, will be victorious.

  • 616

In a few years — Allah’s is the command before and after that — and on that day the believers will rejoice,

  • 616

With the help of Allah. He helps whom He pleases; and He is the Mighty, the Merciful.

  • 617

    A few years.

  • 618

Do they say, ‘We are a victorious host?’

  • 618

The hosts shall soon be routed and will turn their backs in flight.

  • 618

Aye, the Hour is their appointed time; and the Hour will be most calamitous and most bitter.

  • 618

And remember the time when Allah promised you one of the two parties that it should be yours, and you wished that the one without sting should be yours, but Allah desired to establish the truth by His words and to cut off the root of the disbelievers.

  • 619

They are a host from among the confederates which will be routed here.

  • 619

And when the believers saw the confederates, they said, ‘This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us; and Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth.’ And it only added to their faith and submission.

  • 620

When they came upon you from above you, and from below you, and when your eyes became distracted, and your hearts reached to the throats, and you thought diverse thoughts about Allah.

  • 620

There and then were the believers sorely tried, and they were shaken with a violent shaking.

  • 620

And when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was a disease said, ‘Allah and His Messenger promised us nothing but a delusion.’

  • 620

And when a party of them said, ‘O people of Yathrib, you have possibly no stand against the enemy, therefore turn back.’ And a section of them even asked leave of the Prophet, saying, ‘Our houses are exposed and defenceless.’ And they were in truth not exposed. They only sought to flee away.

  • 622

And when the earth is spread out,

  • 622

    وَاَلۡقَتۡ مَا فِیۡہَا وَتَخَلَّتۡ

    And casts out all that is in her, and becomes empty;

  • 622

And gives ear to her Lord — and this is incumbent upon her.

  • 623

When the earth is shaken with her violent shaking,

  • 623

And the earth brings forth her burdens.

  • 624

And when the graves are laid open.

  • 624

When the sun is wrapped up,

  • 624

And when the stars are obscured.

  • 631

And when the mountains are made to move.

  • 632

And when the she-camels, tenmonth pregnant, are abandoned.

  • 633

And when the beasts are gathered together.

  • 634

And when the seas are made to flow forth one into the other.

  • 634

He has made the two bodies of water flow. They will one day meet.

  • 634

Between them is now a barrier; they encroach not one upon the other.

  • 635

And He it is Who has caused the two seas to flow, this palatable and sweet, and that saltish and bitter; and between them He has placed a barrier and a great partition.

  • 636

And when people are brought together.

  • 637

And after him We said to the children of Israel, ‘Dwell ye in the land; and when the time of the promise of the latter days comes, We shall bring you together out of various peoples.’

  • 638

And when the girl-child buried alive is questioned about,

For what crime was she killed?

  • 639

And when books are spread abroad.

  • 639

Convey! And thy Lord is Most Generous,

  • 639

Who taught man by the pen,

  • 639

Taught man what he knew not.

  • 640

And when the heaven is laid bare.

  • 641

And by the heaven full of tracks.

  • 641

By the angels who are sent forth with goodness,

  • 641

And then they push on with a forceful pushing,

  • 641

And by the forces that spread the truth, a good spreading.

  • 641

And then they distinguish fully between good and evil.

  • 642

They cannot hear anything from the exalted assembly of angels — and they are pelted from every side,

  • 642

Repulsed, and for them is a perpetual punishment.

  • 642

O company of Jinn and men! if you have power to go beyond the confines of the heavens and the earth, then do go. But you cannot go save with authority.

  • 643

There shall be sent against you a flame of fire, and smoke; and you shall not be able to help yourselves.

  • 644

And when the Fire is caused to blaze up.

  • 649

Then, as for him whose scales are heavy,

  • 649

He will have a pleasant life.

  • 653

    Woe to every backbiter, slanderer,

  • 653

Who amasses wealth and counts it time after time.

  • 653

He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.

  • 653

Nay! he shall surely be cast into the crushing punishment.

  • 653

And what should make thee know what the crushing punishment is?

  • 653

It is Allah’s kindled fire, Which rises over the hearts.

  • 653

    Which rises over the hearts

  • 653

It will be closed in on them

  • 653

In the form of extended columns.

  • 660

But watch thou for the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke,

  • 660

That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment.

  • 660

Now move on towards that which you treated as a lie,

  • 660

Aye, move on towards a shadow which has three sections,

  • 660

Neither affording shade, nor protecting from the flame.

  • 660

It throws up sparks like huge castles,

  • 660

As if they were camels of dim colour.

  • 661

Woe on that day unto those who reject the truth!

  • 661

How can they benefit by admonition, when there has already come to them a Messenger, explaining things clearly,

  • 661

And yet they turned away from him and said: ‘He is tutored, a man possessed?’

  • 664

And there has already come to them the great news wherein is a warning —

  • 664

Consummate wisdom; but the warnings profit them not.

  • 665

And they ask thee concerning the mountains. Say, ‘My lord will break them into pieces and scatter them as dust.

  • 665

And He will leave them as a barren, level plain,

  • 665

Wherein thou wilt see no depression, or elevation.

  • 665

On that day they will follow the Caller straight, there being no deviation therefrom; and all voices shall be hushed before the Gracious God and thou shalt not hear but a subdued sound of footsteps.

  • 669

    وَقَالَ لَاَتَّخِذَنَّ مِنۡ عِبَادِکَ نَصِیۡبًا مَّفۡرُوۡضًا

    And he said, ‘I will assuredly take a fixed portion from Thy servants;

  • 669

And assuredly I will lead them astray and assuredly I will excite in them vain desires, and assuredly I will incite them and they will cut the ears of cattle.

  • 678

And when the sentence is passed against them, We shall bring forth for them a germ out of the earth, which shall wound them because people did not believe in Our Signs.

  • 686

In that surely are Signs for a people who reflect.

  • 694

    By the fleeting Time,

  • 694

Surely, man is in a state of loss,

  • 694

Except those who believe and do good works, and exhort one another to accept truth, and exhort one another to be steadfast.

  • 708

Does he make the gods to be one God? This is indeed a strange thing.

  • 713

So set thy face to the service of religion as one devoted to God. And follow the nature made by Allah — the nature in which He has created mankind. There is no altering the creation of Allah. That is the right religion. But most men know not.

  • 713

Verily, We Ourself have sent down this Exhortation, and most surely We will be its Guardian.

  • 729

Alas for My servants! there comes not a Messenger to them but they mock at him.

  • 733

    The Seal of the Prophets.

  • 738

Will make him a Messenger to the children of Israel.

  • 759

Say, ‘I am only a man like yourselves; but I have received the revelation that your God is only One God. So let him who hopes to meet his Lord do good deeds, and let him join no one in the worship of his Lord.’

  • 759

As for those who say, ‘Our Lord is Allah,’ and then remain steadfast, the angels descend on them, saying: ‘Fear ye not, nor grieve; and rejoice in the Garden that you were promised.

  • 759

We are your friends in this life and in the Hereafter.

  • 760

And when My servants ask thee about Me, say: ‘I am near. I answer the prayer of the supplicant when he prays to Me. So they should hearken to Me.
