General Remarks CHAPTER 86 AT-TARIQ (Revealed before Hijrah) The Surah derives its title from the word At-Tariq in its opening verse. The consensus of Muslim scholarly opinion assigns the Surah to the early period of the Holy Prophet's ministry. Nöldeke and Muir, among European scholars, agree with this view. The Surah is the last of the chain of chapters which began with Surah Infiṭār. In all these Surahs, the opening verse, in one form or another, furnishes an argument in support of the claim of the Promised Messiah. The intervening Surah Taṭfif, which has a different opening, forms, in fact, a part of Surah Infiṭār. The present Sūrah continues and completes the topics which were dealt with in Surah Infiṭār and in the chapters that follow it and serves as a sort of between the Sūrah that precede and those that follow that Surah. From this Surah, however, begins a new subject. 3353
