CH. 22 AL-HAJJ PT. 17 وَجَاهِدُوا فِي اللهِ حَقَّ جِهَادِهِ هُوَ And strive in the cause of. 79 Allah as it behoves you to strive اجْتَبكُمْ وَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ for it. He has chosen you, and has laid no hardship upon you مِنْ حَرَجٍ مِلَّةَ أَبِيكُمْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ هُوَ in religion; so follow the faith سَمْكُمُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَفِي هَذَا of your father Abraham; He named you Muslims both before لِيَكُونَ الرَّسُولُ شَهِيدًا عَلَيْكُمْ and in this Book, so that the Messenger may be a witness وَتَكُونُوا شُهَدَاءَ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَأَقِيمُوا over you, and that you may be witnesses over mankind. الصَّلوةَ وَأتُوا الزَّكُوةَ وَاعْتَصِمُوا Therefore observe Prayer and pay the Zakāh, and hold fast to بِاللهِ هُوَ مَوْلَكُمْ ۚ فَنِعْمَ الْمَوْلَى Allah. He is your Master. An وَنِعْمَ النَّصِيرُة excellent Master excellent Helper! 2507 Commentary: and an a9:41. 2:136; 16:124. 2:144; 16:90. The verse points to the following four means which it is very essential to adopt for attaining spiritual eminence and success and prosperity in life: (a) To possess firm, sincere and unadulterated faith in God. This is the meaning of the word. (b) To have full and complete reliance and dependence on God and to renounce all unfair and doubtful means for the attainment of one's object. This is the significance of (c) To give unquestioning obedience to God's commandments and unqualified submission to His will, and to develop in oneself Divine attributes so as to become God's own manifestation. This is the import and mankind (). Thus this brief verse covers the entire extent and scope of the ways and means that lead to material and moral progress. 2507. Important Words: strive is derived from) جاهدوا جهد They say i. e. he did his utmost, took extraordinary pains, he employed himself vigorously in prosecuting the affair. means, he fatigued the beast or burdened the beast beyond its power. means, he exerted his utmost power in contending with an object of his disapprobation. means, he fought with the enemy imposing upon himself distress or exerting his utmost power or ability to repel him. واسجدوا واعبدوا purport of the expression Lane) جاهد are infinitives from بجاهدة or (d) To do righteous deeds and serve 2178 & Aqrab).
