CH. 10 YŪNUS PT. 11 وَأَنْ أَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفًا And I have also been. 106 وَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِيْنَ commanded to say: 'Set thy face toward religion as one ever inclined to God, band be not thou of those who ascribe partners to Him. ¹ 1377 on any other that can neither وَلَا تَدْعُ مِنْ دُونِ اللهِ مَا لَا يَنْفَعُكَ ,And call not, beside Allah. 107 E وَلَا يَضُرُّكَ فَإِنْ فَعَلْتَ فَإِنَّكَ profit thee nor harm thee. And if إِذَا مِّنَ الظَّلِمِينَ thou didst so, thou wouldst then the certainly be of wrongdoers. 1378 وَإِن يَمْسَسْكَ اللهُ بِضُرٍ فَلَا كَاشِفَ لَةَ And if Allah touch thee. 108 with harm, there is none who إِلَّا هُوَ وَاِنْ يُرِدْكَ بِخَيْرِ فَارَةَ can remove it but He: and if He لِفَضْلِهِ يُصِيبُ بِهِ مَنْ يَّشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ desireth good for thee, there is none who can repel His grace. b a30:31, 44. 28:88. 28:89. d6:18; 39:39. 1377. Commentary: The expression, be not thou of those who ascribe partners to Him, does not mean, "do not worship false deities," for such an injunction is unnecessary after one has become (ever inclined to God). The truth is that the word has been used here in opposition to the word therefore the clause does not mean that the Holy Prophet should not worship idols (which he never did), but that he should not give the least thought or attention to things or beings other than God, for that too will constitute an act of shirk for a person of his spiritual eminence. Thus the Holy Prophet is bidden here to avoid even the slightest and the most hidden form of✰ (idol-worship). 1378. Commentary: This verse further explains the one that precedes it. The words, And call not, beside Allah on any other, etc. , do not mean that we should not call beside God on such things as can do us neither harm nor good. What is meant is that whatever is beside God possesses no independent power to do us harm or good, so we should not put our reliance on anything beside Him. The word (wrongdoers) is here used in the sense of i. e. those who associate gods with God in any sense. This meaning is supported by a saying of the Holy Prophet which is to the effect that is a form of (Bukhārī, ch. on Tafsir). 1302
