PT. 9 AL-A'RĀF CH. 7 a اِنَّ وَلِي اللَّهُ الَّذِي نَزَّلَ الْكِتَبَ وَهُوَ Truly, my protector is. 197 يَتَوَلَّى الصُّلِحِينَ Allah Who revealed the Book. Such a challenge under such conditions could not but be issued by a true Messenger of God. The challenge was also meant to demonstrate to the Meccans the helplessness of their gods; for it invited them to enlist their help against Islam. 1082. Commentary: The words, And they. . . have no power to help you, nor can they help themselves, embody the dual prophecy which foretold the discomfiture of the idolaters in their struggle against the Holy Prophet on the one hand, and the disappearance of idolatry from Arabia on the other. The prophecy was fulfilled in a very remarkable way when Mecca fell and the Ka'bah was cleared of the idols which had been worshipped there for centuries by the Arabs as their national deities. That day the idolaters clearly realized the futility of idol- worship and embraced Islam in large numbers. 1083. Commentary: A person steeped in error refuses to accept the truth, however clear and unmistakable the signs shown to him to establish the untenability of his position. The verse means to say that disbelievers see the cause of Islam making progress by rapid strides before their own eyes, yet they pretend not to see it and refuse to acknowledge it. 1071 1084.
