PT. 8 CH. 7 who AL-A'RĀF those among them who لِلَّذِينَ اسْتُضْعِفُوا لِمَنْ آمَنَ مِنْهُمْ were reckoned weak ا تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ صُلِحًا مُرْسَلٌ مِنْ رَّبِّهِ believed Do you know for قَالُوا إِنَّا بِمَا أُرْسِلَ بِهِ مُؤْمِنُوْنَ certain that Ṣāliḥ is one sent by his Lord?' They answered, 'Surely, we believe in that with which he has been sent. '974 قَالَ الَّذِينَ اسْتَكْبَرُوا إِنَّا بِالَّذِي أَمَنْتُم بِهِ Those who were arrogant. 77 كُفِرُونَ said, 'Verily, we do disbelieve in that in which you believe. '975 فَعَقَرُوا النَّاقَةَ وَعَتَوْا عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ Then they hamstring the. 78 she-camel and rebelled against وَقَالُوا يُصْلِحُ ائْتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَا إِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ the command of their Lord, and الْمُرْسَلِينَ said, 'O Ṣāliḥ, bring us that which thou threatenest us with, if thou art indeed one of the Messengers. '976 974. Important Words: (chief men). See 2:247. Commentary: "See 7:74. When the so-called leaders of his tribe found, to their mortification, that Ṣāliḥ stood firm as a rock in his convictions and no amount of persuasion could make him swerve from his purpose, they began to harass his followers, but these too they found bold and firm. 975. Commentary: The words, Verily, we do disbelieve in that in which you believe, in popular parlance signify a typical form of arrogant but veiled threat generally held out by rich and powerful people to the weaker and poorer section of society. The words may be interpreted as: "How dare you, weak and poor as you are, accept a teaching which we, your betters and superiors, have thought fit to reject?" 976.
