CH. 5 كَانُوا لَا يَتَنَاهَوْنَ عَنْ مُنْكَرِ فَعَلُوْهُ لَبِئْسَ مَا كَانُوا يَفْعَلُوْنَ PT. 6 AL-MA'IDAH 80. "They did not prohibit one another from the iniquity which they committed. Evil indeed was that which they used to do. 710 them taking the disbelievers as their friends. Surely, evil is that تَرى كَثِيرًا مِّنْهُمْ يَتَوَلَّوْنَ الَّذِينَ Thou shalt see many of. 81 كَفَرُوا لَبِئْسَ مَا قَدَّمَتْ لَهُمْ أَنْفُسُهُمْ أَنْ سَخِطَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَفِي الْعَذَابِ which they themselves have هُمْ خُلِدُونَ sent on before for themselves; with the result that Allah is "displeased with them; and in this punishment they shall abide. 711 A. D. , a5:64. b3:163. into captivity in 586 B. C. ; while, as a result of the curse of Jesus, they were visited by terrible afflictions by Titus, who captured Jerusalem in about 70 devastated the city and profaned the Temple by causing swine to be slaughtered there—an animal hated and abhorred by Jews. 710. Commentary: One of the great sins which drew the wrath of God upon the Jewish people was that they did not prohibit one another from the evil practices which were so rife among them. While some simply connived at these evil practices, others actually encouraged them. Unfortunately, Muslim scholars and priests of the present day are also guilty of this deadly sin. They will not preach against the evils to which the wealthier and the more powerful Muslims are addicted. 805 711. Important Words: (is displeased). The word b means, he was or became displeased or discontented; he was or became angry. They say albi. e. he was or became displeased or discontented or means, he سخط الشيء. angry with him disliked or became discontented with the thing (Lane & Aqrab). Commentary: word In this verse the "disbelievers" stands for "idolaters". See note on 5:58. The clause lo ut of a (evil is that which they themselves have sent on before for themselves) may also be rendered as "evil is that which their souls have brought forward, or brought to the forefront, for them", i. e. that which their souls have made to appear fair in their sight is really evil and foul.
