CH. 3 ĀL-E-‘IMRĀN PT. 4 يَايُّهَا الَّذِينَ امَنُوا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا بِطَانَةً O ye who believe! take. 119 not others than your own people b مِنْ دُونِكُمْ لَا يَأْلُونَكُمْ خَبَالًا وَدُّوا مَا as intimate friends; they will عَنِتُّمْ ۚ قَدْ بَدَتِ الْبَغْضَاءُ مِنْ not fail to corrupt you. They love to see you in trouble. أَفْوَاهِهِمْ ۚ وَمَا تُخْفِي صُدُورُهُمْ اَكْبَرُ Hatred has already shown itself قَدْ بَيَّنَّا لَكُمُ الْأَيْتِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ mouths, and what their breasts through the utterances of their conceal is greater still. Important Words: a (intimate friends) is derived from i. e. it was or became hidden. ab means a lining; an inner vest; a close and intimate friend or friends; a friend or friends to whom one reveals one's secrets (Aqrab). (corruption) is derived from They say a i. e. he made him or it corrupt or evil. means, the grief affected and vitiated his reason. means, he confined the man and prevented him from it. means, corruption or bad condition whether of body or reason or actions; loss or deterioration; ruin destruction; fatal poison (Aqrab). or sin (Aqrab). Commentary: ,rendered as لايالونكم خبالا The words also mean: (1) they have no scruple in they will not fail to corrupt you, may ruining you; (2) they leave no stone unturned to spoil your work; (3) they will do what they can to corrupt your religion; (4) they are always busy injuring you. they love to see ودوا ما عنتم The words you in trouble) may, in the light of the meanings given under Important Words above, mean: (1) they love to see you fall into calamity and misfortune; (2) they love to see you perish; (3) they love to see you become weak and broken; (4) they misfortune befell him and he got into love to see you become sinful. . عنت in trouble is derived from) عنتم They sayi. e. the thing became bad فلان. or corrupt عنت means, 548
