GLOSSARY 717 Fanā Lit. , passing away. See Baqā. Fanā fillāh A state of being lost in the love of Allah. Furqan Literally, the 'Discrimination. Another name for the Holy Quran, meaning the discrimination between right and wrong. Ghair Muqallid Literally 'non-follower. In Islamic terminology, it refers to individuals or groups who do not strictly adhere to the rulings and in- terpretations of a specific traditional school of Islamic jurisprudence. Ghauth / Ghauthiyyat Ranks and hon- orary titles for the Saints in Islam. Gog and Magog The words, Ya'jūj and Ma'juj (Gog and Magog), are both de- rived from the root-word Ajja which means, he was quick in his pace; he or it became the flaming fire (Lane), and refer to the Scythians of the farthest East. Or, as some say, all nations in- habiting the north of Asia and Europe (Enc. Brit. & Jewish Enc. under 'Gog' and 'Magog, and Historians' History of the World, vol. 2, p. 582 & Ezekiel, 38:2-6 & 39:6). The words may also apply to Christian nations of the West as they have made much use of burn- ing fire and boiling water and because all their material progress and great discoveries and inventions are due to the right and very extensive use of these things. Or, the words may imply the restless behaviour of these nations as they are always on the lookout rest- lessly and impatiently to make new conquests. Hadith A saying of the Holy Prophet Muhammad sas. The plural is ahādīth. Hadrat A term of respect used to show honour and reverence for a person of established righteousness and piety. The literal meaning is: His/Her Holi- ness, Worship, Eminence, etc. Haram Unlawful Harith Harith means a cultivator and Harrath means a big landlord. Refers to the exodus from Makkah to Madinah by the Holy Prophet Muhammadsas in the year 623 CE, which marks the beginning of the lunar calendar of Islam. Holy Prophetsas A title used exclusively for the Founder of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad sas. Holy Quran The final and perfect Scripture revealed by Allah for the guidance of mankind for all times to come. It was revealed word by word to the Holy Prophet Muhammadsas over a period of twenty-three years. Hudur see Hadrat Iblīs An attributive name meaning 'he turned away.
