Yamamah was a historical region in cen- tral Arabia (now Saudi Arabia), no- table in early Islamic history for the Battle of Yamamah (632-633 CE), where Muslim forces defeated the false prophet Musailimah, suffering significant losses among Quran mem- orizers. Yathrib was the pre-Islamic name of the city that later became known as Medina (Al-Madinah Al-Munaw- warah, "the enlightened city"). Lo- cated in western Arabia about 210 miles north of Mecca, it became the Prophet Muhammad's place of ref- uge after the Hijra (migration) from Mecca in 622 CE. The people of Yath- rib welcomed Muhammad and his followers, and the city became the first capital of the emerging Islamic state.
