LETTER TO NAWWAB MUHAMMAD ALI KHAN 407 from among the Muslims make the effort and put the one whom they call a faithless kāfir [disbeliever] and a dajjal [deceiver] to a test against some Christian clergyman, while he himself would only have to watch the spectacle. 5. THE FIFTH SIGN of my truth is that I have been told that I shall also prevail over these Muslims in the sphere of my visions and revelations. Those from among them who claim to be recipients of revelation should, therefore, come forward in opposition to me. Then, if they prevail against me in Divine support, heavenly boun- ties, and heavenly Signs, I agree to being slaughtered with the knife of their choice. And if they do not possess the strength to compete with me, then I call upon those who have declared me a kāfir [dis- believer] and for challenging whom I have been granted permission through revelation, that they should agree in writing beforehand, which should be published, that if they witness a miraculous Sign they would accept my claim without any further ado. I am ready for this task also and my Noble God is with me but I have been com- manded that I should enter into such a contest only with the lead- ers of those who have declared me a kāfir. I should hold the mubā- halah only with them, and if they so wish, I shall enter this contest with them alone. It must be noted, however, that they would never come forward for this contest, for truth has struck terror into their hearts, and they are well aware of their transgression and excess. They will also certainly not come forward for mubāhalah, but I shall, for my part, shortly issue public announcement notices to them in my book, Dāfiʻul-Wasāwis [‘Remover of Misgivings']. As for the common people, who are not among the leaders or men of learning, nor have they issued any edict against me, the Divine commandment to me concerning them is that if they wish to see miraculous Signs, they should come and stay in my company.
