BATALĀWI'S STATEMENTS & THEIR RESPONSES 351 My Statement: All these are your disgraceful lies which are emanating from your mouth uncontrollably because of your innate [evil] nature. Otherwise, those who carefully consider your writings and mine can decide for themselves whether making accusations, telling lies, or shirk- ing discussion are a characteristic of my humble self or your own. Who would indulge in such crafty talk if not you as you are a Shaikh with some familiarity with the law, and are overly proud of your little learn- ing? But take due note that the day is coming when God Almighty will Himself make manifest which of us two is the liar, the fabricator, and the disgraced and humiliated in the eyes of God Almighty, and whose honour is established by the Benevolent God with heavenly Signs. Be patient for a little while and witness the end. His Statement: If you had even a trace of kindness and sympathy, you would have at once called me to your own place or paid me a visit when I opposed your claim of being the Promised Messiah. My Statement: Dear Sir! Who had prevented you from coming to me? Were there guards at my door who stopped you? Were you used to asking permission before coming to see me in the past? Your father, even if ill and suffering from fever, used to come to me somehow from Batala; so, what new obstacle prevented you? And, since you were not going to abandon your innate meanness and jealousy, devilish nature, conceit, and pride in any circumstances, what sympathy or kind- ness could I show you by inviting you to my home? Moreover, I also thought it inadvisable to go to your home, for I had recognized the elements of pride and conceit in your nature. I thought it would be useful to first purge you entirely of these elements. There is, however, no improvement in your condition up till now. God knows what fury is filled within you. Allah, glorified be His eminence, knows that I have endured your abuse with great patience. I was tormented [by you] vehemently and kept trying to stop you from this course. Even now, I can patiently
