PREFACE FOOTNOTE 171 the system which had been adopted for his physical development so that both systems, the external and the internal, and the physical and the spiritual, through their balance and harmony, point to the One Creator, who, by His will, regulates everything. This is verily the reason why angels were appointed as mediators for the spiritual and, indeed, for the physical development of man. However, all these mediators are under the control of God Almighty like a machine which is run by His holy hand. They have no will of their own, nor do they exercise any control. Just as air enters our body by the command of God Almighty and goes out of it by His command and exerts its influence by His command, the same is the case and the sum total of the situation with angels: يَفْعَلُونَ مَا يُؤْمَرُونَ [They do what they are commanded]. AUTHOR'S MARGIN NOTE This is a misunderstanding of Pandit Dayanand and the Aryas that this is a defect of the Quranic teaching that it has assumed the existence of Satan without proof and has declared him to be the one who beguiles man. It is a pity that Pandit Dayanand has raised an objection against this system of angels. Alas! I wish that the revered Pandit had knowledge of God's physical and spiritual systems so that, instead of raising objections, he would have appreciated the excellences of the teaching of the Holy Quran-how true and accurate a picture of the law of nature is found in it! ANOTHER objection is that there are certain indications in the Noble Quran and similarly indicated in some aḥādīth—that there was a delay sometimes in the descent of [the angel] Gabriel [Jibrā’īl]; namely, that during the period of apostleship of the Holy Prophet, peace and the blessings of Allah be upon him, it also happened that Gabriel did not descend upon the Holy Prophet, peace and the blessings of Allah be upon him, for several days.
