FOOTNOTE¹ The translation of these verses² is: I swear by the heaven and by that which comes in the night. And what knowledge have as to what it is that comes at night? It is a glittering star. And the statement is made under oath to affirm that there is not a single living thing that does not have a guardian over it; that is to say, over everything from among His created beings, there is an angel that has been appointed who protects it and constantly accompanies it. God Almighty has stated this verse with an all comprehensive scope by qualifying it with the word j [kull—meaning 'all']; thus, it is clearly proven that everything to which the word nafs [individual thing, body, soul] can be applied is safeguarded by angels. Hence, according to this verse, we must believe about the celestial bodies that all stel- lar objects—the Sun, the Moon, Saturn, Jupiter-are under the protection of angels. That is, for each of them-Sun and the Moon, etc. —an angel is appointed who safeguards it and runs its functions appropriately. 3* 1. Footnote is referenced from the main text on page 97. Note: This theme is further supported by this verse: [And verily, We have adorned the lowest heaven with lamps, and We have made them for driving away satans (Surah al-Mulk, 67:6)]. As the act of driving away is performed by the angels and not the stars, it is s proven categorically that every star has a guardian angel appointed over it. As, due to the intensity of their relationship, the angels are like the life and soul of the stars, so in this verse the acts of the angels are attributed to the stars. So reflect. Author
