152 Ā'ĪNA-E-KAMĀLĀT-E-ISLĀM―DĀFI‘UL-WASĀWIS from the command of Allah Almighty, and prioritizes His will over his own, be deemed worthy of blame? It should also be remembered that after this verse God Almighty says: لِيُعَذِّبَ اللهُ الْمُنْفِقِينَ وَالْمُنْفِقْتِ وَالْمُشْرِكِينَ وَالْمُشْرِكَتِ وَ يَتُوبَ اللَّهُ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَتِ وَ كَانَ اللهُ Meaning that: That is, when man accepted the trust from Allah, it necessitated that the hypocrite men and hypocrite women, and the polytheist men and polytheist women, who only accepted it verbally but did not adhere to it in practice, would be punished. On the other hand, the believing men and women, who accepted the trust and also adhered to it in practice, would become recipients of Allah's mercy. This verse, too, speaks out clearly and unequivocally that zalūm and jahul in the verse under discussion refer to the believers whose natures and capacities accepted the trust and then remained steadfast upon it; for, it is abundantly clear that the polytheists and hypocrites did not fully accept it. The addition of the [definite article] aliflām in the phrase is really for the purpose of particularizing. This proves Allah's intent that not all human beings fully accepted the trust- only the believers did. Though the hypocrites and polytheists possessed a slight capacity for it, they could not fully partake in this beloved title of zalum and jahul due to the deficiency of their capacity. But those who had been granted greater strength fully embraced this blessing. They did not merely acknowledge this trust with their tongues; they demonstrated it through their actions and deeds, and returned to Him the trust, which they had received, with the utmost integrity. Lastly, it should also be clear that the word jahul, like the word zalum, has been used in the sense that is compatible with righteous- ness and holiness.
