PREFACE ESSENCE OF ISLAM 89 person afflicted with some calamity, and if he looks upon someone with compassion, that person becomes the object of the mercy of God Almighty. AUTHOR'S MARGIN NOTE Everything associated with the men of God is blessed Just as the Divine command [Kun— 'Be!'] always brings into being the desired result without delay, in the same way, when such a person says, 'Be!' in the state of the upsurge and rising tide of liqa, it too does not fail. As I stated earlier, the real reason for these miraculous Signs is that such a person, on account of his intense union with God, becomes the metaphorical reflection of God's glory and greatness, and Divine manifestations take perpetual hold over him, and the True Beloved takes him into His embrace and removes all intervening veils on account of his extreme closeness to Him. And as He Himself is Blessed, He con- fers blessings upon his words and works, activity and ease, food and clothing, space and time, and all his essential characteristics. Thus, every single thing that comes into contact with him, even without him resorting to prayer, receives blessings. There is blessing in his home, and the threshold of its doors are filled with blessings. Blessings rain down upon the doors of his home, which he experiences contin- uously and whose fragrance he perceives. When he travels, God Almighty keeps him company with all His blessings, and when he returns home, he brings an ocean of light with him. In short, he is a wonderful person whose true condition is not known to anyone except God Almighty.
