28 HADRAT MIRZA GHULAM AHMADAS وَلَتَسْمَعُنَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ وَمِنَ الَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا أَذًى كَثِيرًا وَإِنْ تَصْبِرُوا وَتَتَّقُوْا فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ مِنْ عَزْمِ الْأُمُورِ meaning, you shall surely hear many hurtful things from the People of the Book and from other creature worshippers. But if you show fortitude and refrain from transgression you shall be counted before God as ones of high resolve. Similarly, regarding another occasion when our religion will be criticised God says: وَجَادِلْهُمْ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ . . . وَلْتَكُن مِّنْكُمْ أُمَّةٌ يَدْعُوْنَ إِلَى الْخَيْرِ وَيَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ وَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ That is to say, when you engage in a religious debate with the Christians do it wisely with rational arguments and your discourse must be in an agreeable manner. Let there always be among you such men as should invite towards goodness and prosperity, and call people unto things that have been confirmed by reason and heavenly testimonies, and forbid things that have been repudiated by reason and heavenly testimonies. Here the Promised Messiah, peace be upon him, is referring to Sūrah an-Nahl, 16:126 in which it is stated اُدْعُ إِلَى سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ وَجَادِلْهُمْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ that is "Call unto the way of thy Lord with wisdom and goodly exhortation, and argue with them in a way that is best.
