92 HADRAT MIRZA GHULAM AHMADAS account of its favours, beneficence and acts of kindness. And we pray for it with sincerity and pure hearts. We pray that Allah may bring the Empress of India to good end and save her from all kinds of sorrows and misfortunes and avert all evils and calamities away from her and bestow upon her Divine knowledge out of His grace and bounty. Indeed He does what He pleases and He is the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy. As we witnessed these favours from this Government and found their intentions based on good will, we realised that it would be inappropriate on our part to hurt them regarding their co-religionists after receiving such favours from them. It is inexcusable to make such demands from [the Government] as are contrary to the policies of the state. Rather it is incumbent upon us to argue with the Christian priests in the spirit of wis- dom and goodly exhortation and defend [Islam] with that which is best and stop making complaints to the Government. This much is clear. We know that vilification by the Christian priests has reached the limit and their knives have wounded our hearts and they have assaulted our people as a wolf pounces on a lamb and they leapt at us like a striped panther. So, many a man drank the cup of death at their hands and they achieved through their deception what can never be achieved by the swords and demon- strated [by their examples] that they were the ones to hasten forth from every height. Indeed you have received such tidings as need not be mentioned. So grieve not, nor be sorrowful, but steadfastly look forward to the days of Allah.
