THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 1906 Ghazal by the Promised Messiah, may peace and blessings be on him ہمیں مرا است که جانم رہیں دلداری است مرانہ زہد و عبادت نہ خدمت و کاری است I have nothing to offer by way of devotion, worship, service, or any achievement; It is only that my soul is pledged to the Beloved. چه راحتی است بکویش اگر چه خون باری است چه لذتی است بر ویش که جان فدایش باد There is such delight in His countenance that my life is sacrificed for Him; There is a wondrous joy in His way, even though great sacrifices are called for there. به بین دلائل دعوے اگر چہ بیکاری است صحیح وقت مرا کرد آنکه دید ایں حال When God saw this condition of mine, He made me the Messiah of the Age; You should now look at the arguments in support of my claim, though (according to you) they are useless. شفاء ما بہ ہمیں رنج و درد و آزاری است دوائے عشق نہ خواہم کہ آں ہلاکت ما است I do not wish my love to be remedied [as though it were a disease], For this would cause my death-my healing is in this pain and illness. چه نالی روز و شب از بهر مردار ره مولی طلب کن اگر مردی If you are a man, then seek the way of the Lord; Why do you keep crying day and night after this carcass (the mate- rial world)? نمی رنجم گر اکنون سر به پیچند که ترک رسم و ره کاری است دشوار If they turn away from me now, I am not angry; For, it is very difficult to break customs and traditions. 439
