29 NOVEMBER 1905 Hadrat Hasan and Hadrat Husain, may Allah be pleased with Both of Them In my estimation, Hadrat Hasana carried out an immensely vir- tuous act by withdrawing [his claim] from Khilafat. Thousands had died already. He did not want any further killing, so he took an allowance from Mu'awiyah. Since this deed of Hadrat Hasana strikes a blow upon the Shia, they are not entirely pleased with Imam Hasana. I praise both. The truth is that each had different strengths. Hadrat Imam Hasanta did not want greater civil war and bloodshed among Muslims. He highlighted the significance of maintaining peace. And Hadrat Imam Husainta did not like to take Baiat [the Pledge of Allegiance] at the hand of a wicked sinner because it corrupts the Faith. Both had good intentions 1. إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ ]Actions are judged by their intentions']. It is another matter that Islam progressed under Yazīd as well. It is the grace of God Almighty; should He desire, progress may be made even through the hand of a wicked person. Yazīd's son was a righteous man. Everyone Works according to their Ability The truth is that everyone works according to their ability. قُلْ كُلٌّ يَعْمَلُ عَلَى شَاكِلَتِهِ 2 179 1.
