With great effort and striving, as far as it was possible for me, I have carefully looked at the Șihāḥ-e-Sitta [Six Authentic Books of Hadith] and other books of ahādīth. I did not come across a single place in which the meaning of تونن - ]tawaffi] was any- thing other than death in the Hadith. However, I discovered approximately 300 such instances where it meant death in every case. 4. As far as it was possible for me, I have also seen different divans of Arabia. However, I have not found any phrase in the writ- ings of the poets of Jahiliyyah [the pre-Islamic period known as 'Ignorance'], or the authentic poets of the age of Islam, in the circumstances described above where any other meaning than death was found. 5. The same is also written in Shah Waliullah's Fauzul-Kabir that مُتَوَفِّيكَ مُمِيتُكَ ]mutawaffika means mumituka-'I shall give you death']. Furthermore, I know that Shah Waliullah Şahib was a muhaddith [jurist] and learned scholar of excellent standing. 6. It is found in the hadith of the Miraj [Spiritual Ascension], which is in Şahih al-Bukhārī, that on the night of the Mi'raj, the Holy Prophet, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saw Jesus, peace be on him, among the deceased Prophets. 2 1.
